We understand that most people don't have an endless budget, so getting the most out of your budget is important. Don’t break the bank on items that are easily upgraded later.
The first step is to identify such items. Here are a few examples. Light switches and lights: It's easy to overspend on light switches and lights. We oftentimes think we need a lot more (or nicer) than we really do. Always remember the three levels of lighting: function, mood/ambient and natural, but don't go crazy or you'll find yourself with lots of light shining down on nothing. Premium wall coverings: Expensive wall paper, wainscot paneling and other various wall covering products can easily be added down the road. Have a pattern you're in love with? Buy a sample piece and frame it. Or, start saving some money now so you can maximize on a great deal or sale when you find one. Mouldings: Crown moulding and chair rails are gorgeous, but the cost can add up quickly. They greatly improve your space, but they don't help if they makes you broke. These items are also very easy to add at a later date. Flooring: Flooring is a major project to change or re-do down the road. Floors are also a major aesthetic detail that affects the value of your home. Take the money you saved on the switches, lights, wall coverings and mouldings and put it toward flooring. Custom kitchen cabinets: The quality, variety and availability of "stock" cabinets have greatly improved. Custom made kitchen cabinets for a 10’ x 8’ kitchen can run upwards of $20-$30,000... and that's just to have them manufactured!! The same size kitchen with quality stock cabinets will run about $10-$15,000. That's a 50% savings! The appearance and function will be very similar, and at those savings, worth every dollar. The next time you start a project, keep these tips in mind and you can save yourself some serious cash. And with saved cash come comfort, confidence and a possibility for extra features you might have otherwise missed out on!
